I've collected a list of top-notch movies on Netflix for the whole family just in time for this Halloween! From the merely spooky, to the outrageously grisly, to the romantically macabre, to the gruesomely funny... these are the horror films that you need to let a little more horror into your existence.

Horror as a modern genre emerged out of the aftermath of World War One and has evolved to meet the changing emotional needs of the times ever since. We turn to horror to understand ourselves and explore the hardest aspects of the world around us, as much as we do simply to be entertained.

Netflix is going through some big changes now that the new streaming wars are upon us, and you're not likely to find as many of the big-name horror films on the platform as you might have last year. Still, just because the available films are more in the indie range doesn't make them any less horrific—there are some bad boys here that will curl your toe hair for sure. And let's not forget the excellent horror series offerings that Netflix boasts. While these aren't films, they are just too darned excellent to leave off this list.
