How to make a GIF using Photoshop

Let's get this out of the way. It's pronounced GIF not GIF.

In this guide, we’ll be creating our very own GIF. We’re not just making reaction GIFs—we'll create our own GIF from scratch using Photoshop. In this guide, I'm using Photoshop CC.

Photoshop New Project

Open Photoshop and create a new project. In my example, the GIF will be 500px by 500px. I have also set the color mode to RGB.

Photoshop Layers

We will create our own animation using layers. Each layer will be used as a single frame for the GIF. Create a layer for each frame of your GIF animation.

Photoshop Timeline Window

If the timeline window isn’t visible, you’ll need to force it into view. Go to Window at the top of the screen and check the Timeline selection.

Create Frame Animation Photoshop

Click the big button in the middle of the timeline that says “Create Frame Animation”. If your big button says something else, click the tiny arrow next to it and set it to “Create Frame Animation” before clicking.

Turn Layers into Frames Photoshop

Open the Timeline settings by clicking the three lines in the upper right corner of the Timeline window. Choose “Make frames from layers”.

GIF Frame Duration Photoshop

Now it’s time to decide how long each frame will be displayed. A longer display time makes the GIF slower. Under each frame in the Timeline window, you’ll see the option to set the frame duration.

Play your GIF in Photoshop to get a feel for how the final product will look.

Loop GIF Photoshop

You can choose to make your GIF loop indefinitely. Select the loop options from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the Timeline window. You can choose for your GIF to play once, loop three times, or continuously loop forever.

Export GIF Photoshop

To export your GIF, go to File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy). There are several options you can adjust to affect image quality. Pay close attention to dithering - you may want to experiment with its percentage until you get the results you want.

Click save.

Congratulations! You’ve made your very own GIF—and you should be proud. Now it’s time to show off your work to the rest of the world. You may also be interested in our guide on how to disable the start screen for Photoshop.

Here's the final product!

You’ve got it set to M for “mini."

You can resize a single layer or several layers at a time using Adobe Photoshop. I'll be using Adobe Photoshop 2020, but any version will work.
