Want to add a power button to your Raspberry Pi project but you don't have a soldering iron? No problem! This two-pack of pre-soldered power buttons has you covered.

This push button allows you to safely shut down your Raspberry Pi and turn it back on with the press of a button.

Of course, these premade buttons can also be used for other purposes: such as triggering a script, a system restart, illuminating an LED, and more.

Usage

We wrote a whole Raspberry Pi power button guide to show you how to set up and use these buttons. We also created a YouTube video tutorial. In a nutshell, we'll:

  1. Connect the power button to two pins on your Raspberry Pi's 40-pin GPIO header: Pin 5 (SCL) and Pin 6 (GND)
  2. Run the one-line setup script from our GitHub repo
  3. Press the button to safely shut your Pi down; press it again to turn it back on!

FAQs

How do I uninstall the power button script?

As documented in our GitHub repo, simply run the uninstall command: ./pi-power-button/script/uninstall.

What if something is already connected to Pin 6 (GND) on my Pi?

If pin 6 is already in use, you can use any other ground pin (9, 14, 20, 25, 30, 34, or 39).

What if something is already connected to Pin 5 (SCL) on my Pi?

The "wake" functionality that turns the Pi back on relies on Pin 5 (SCL); if you have a HAT or bonnet already using this pin, it may conflict and you won't be able to wake your Pi using the power button. Instead, you'll need to disconnect and reconnect your Pi's power cable to turn it on. This is a limitation of all Raspberry Pi power buttons and switches. If you aren't sure whether your HAT or bonnet uses Pin 5 (SCL), look it up here.

Will my Pi continue to consume any power after shutting it down using the power button?

No. Unlike many other Pi power buttons that require "listening" scripts, your Pi will consume 0 power while in the "off" state.

Which Raspberry Pi models does this power button work on?

This power button works on any Raspberry Pi model.

Does it matter which cable I connect to which pin?

No. This power button is not polarized, so you can connect either cable to either pin.
