The variety of Minecraft blocks and ways to build with them is incredibly vast. As an avid Minecraft player, I’ve recently become obsessed with Forge Minecraft mods that add new blocks or items to the base game.

This guide will go through mods available for Minecraft Forge that either improve or add new items and blocks to the game. This can be anything from decorations to storage to creating custom blocks. There are mods for nearly any aesthetic or style, so whether you’re hosting a survival multiplayer server or playing alone, you’ll find something below for any type of Minecraft player!

Note that the game versions available may change since the time of publishing. Most photos were taken using BSL Shaders and Optifine in 1.16.5.

1 – Quark

By Vazkii

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

Quark is one of the most popular mods for a reason. Not only does it add new blocks, but it adds features every player wishes were in the vanilla game. Some examples are double doors opening together, turning dirt blocks to a path, being able to use a lava bucket as trash, and being able to pat a dog’s head. There’s a load of other features available, which you can browse through on the developer’s website!

2 – Iron Chests

By ProgWML6

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.16

The Iron Chests mod upgrades chests with vanilla Minecraft metals to add more storage. It’s a must need for servers with many resources to gather and doesn’t lag as much as mods like Storage Drawers.

3 – Storage Drawers

By Texelsaur

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

While chests are nice, Storage Drawers adds an aesthetically pleasing storage system to the game. Instead of having an inventory interface, each drawer holds one type of item. There’s a variety of styles and upgrades, letting you customize how you want your storage room to look. I do warn that this mod can cause some lag if many blocks are placed together in one area. It’s best to place them in moderation or in an area that only a few people will notice.

4 – Chisel and Bits

By AlgorithmX2

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.16

I’ll preface by saying that this mod is for those professional or serious Minecraft builders. The tools added by Chisel and Bits allows players to create new custom decorative blocks for their builds. It’s an amazing mod that isn’t intensive on servers!

5 – OpenBlocks Elevator

By vsngarcia

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

Whether you’re building a modern city or just don’t have the space for stairs, this elevator block is a perfect addition. What’s even better is you can customize the appearance of the elevator block with whatever block or slab you want! So it’ll fit right into whatever build you’re creating.

6 – Chisel

By tterrag1098

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.16

If you want a mod like Chisel and Bits, but not as intimidating, then check out Chisel. It adds a variety of decorative blocks using one tool, an iron chisel. Instead of having to come up with a block design yourself, has premade block variations.

7 – Comforts

By TheIllusiveC4

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

Another great welcome gift for new server players is a sleeping bag from the Comforts mod. This mod adds both sleeping bags and hammocks to Minecraft, which can be used just like beds. However, they don’t set the player’s spawn point, which makes them ideal for adventures throughout your world. They come in a variety of colors and can be configured for server preferences.

8 – MrCrayfish’s Furniture Mod + Add-ons

By MrCrayfish

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.16

This is one of the most popular decoration mods out there. The Furniture Mod adds, you guessed it, furniture! It includes over 80 pieces of furniture, some with functionality, and a fully functional mail system! There are also multiple add-ons that include vehiclesmodern weapons, and more furniture variants.

9 – Cyclic

By Lothrazar

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

The Cyclic mod is basically “everything but the kitchen sink.” It adds new blocks, enchantments, tools, ores, and more!

10 – Create

By simibubi

Game Versions: 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

This mod provides a mix of new to Minecraft. Create adds many building and decoration blocks, as well as automation tools. It’s a lightweight tech mod for those wanting to have technology on a server, but not overload players with having to learn large mod mechanics.

11 – Chance Cubes

By TurkeyDev

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

If you love a little risk (and silly fun), Chance Cubes is a great way to entertain players. Cubes are found in chest throughout the world or can be crafted. Rewards can be helpful, devastating, or just plain annoying. Results may vary, but I do recommend using the configuration file to turn off any of the large rewards that could crash games. Seriously, you don’t need the Inception reward crashing your server in the middle of the night and leaving behind a giant tower and hole into the void.

12 – Macaw’s Mods

By sketch_macaw

This developer has created a handful of decorative and building block mods that deserve equal attention. Each of their names explains exactly what to expect, variations of furniture, decorations, windows, doors, and more!

Macaw’s Bridges
Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

Macaw’s Doors
Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

Macaw’s Roofs
Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

Macaw’s Windows
Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

Macaw’s Trapdoors
Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

Macaw’s Furniture
Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

Macaw’s Fences and Walls
Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

Macaw’s Paintings
Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

Macaw’s Lights and Lamps
Game Version: 1.16

Howchoo’s Recommendation: Don’t bother with the furniture as other mods have nicer looking versions, but definitely get the roofs and paintings!

13 – Bountiful

By ejektaflex

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

To add some more RPG elements into your server, I recommend Bountiful. It’s a simple-to-use mod that adds a bounty board to villages that generate bounties and decrees for players to interact with. Once a bounty has been taken from the board and completed, you return the board and receive various prizes. Server admins can also create custom bounties!

14 – Simply Light

By Flanks255

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

This mod adds much needed variety of lighting to Minecraft. Some are redstone reactive, while others can be waterlogged to add lighting to your pool. It’s a great, simple mod that adds some new features without bogging down your server or world.

15 – Decorative Blocks

By stohun

Game Versions: 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

The Decorative Blocks mod adds, you guessed it, decorative blocks! It adds some much-needed blocks like wooden beams, chandelier, and a lattice, which all can make a home feel more lived in than the base game. It also has add-ons for various other bigger mods to give more wood and design variants.

16 – Charm Reforged

By svenhjol

Game Version: 1.16

Inspired by Quark, Charm Reforged is a lightweight mod that adds some much-needed fixes and blocks to the game. There are wood variants for bookshelves, barrels, chests, and boats. It also adds some tweaks like campfires no longer damaging mobs, editable signs, and various new recipes.

17 – Artifacts

By ochotonida

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

Artifacts aims to make exploration more rewarding by adding a variety of powerful items which cannot be crafted. While some look silly, they each hold a purpose and unique effect for the player. It also adds a mimic mob, which spawn underground and look just like chests and drop artifacts when killed. Personally, I think they’re one of the scariest mobs I’ve encountered in a modded world.

18 – Traveler’s Backpack

By Tiviacz1337

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

Traveler’s Backpack is a mod inspired by its predecessors to add various collectible and functional backpacks to Minecraft. There’s approximately 75 custom styles to choose from, some of which have special abilities, and each backpack holds 45 inventory slots and two fluid tanks that can store up to four buckets of fluid (or 16 potion bottles)!

19 – Modern Online Picture Frame

By anar4732

Game Versions: 1.15, 1.16

If you’d like a way to allow custom pictures on a server, but don’t want to take up server storage space, then this mod is for you. I will give a disclaimer that the developer doesn’t natively speak English, so there are some typos in their mod. It still works great when you want to add unique pictures or signs to the world!

20 – Supplementaries

By MehVahJukaar

Game Versions: 1.15, 1.16

What makes the Supplementaries mod standout is that it doesn’t add generic decoration blocks. It adds decorations that are both functional and sometimes animated! It’s a great addition to other decor mods because of how unique it is!

21 – Hats

Yes, that is a T. rex hat on a horse.

By ohaiiChun

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.16

Another fun addition to a Minecraft server? Hats! This mod adds collectible hats throughout the world. Mobs have a chance to spawn wearing hats, which you can collect or just keep a chicken farm with adorable and silly hats. Some hats are customizable with accessories or by changing the colors. There are even hats featuring famous pop culture icons like the TARDIS from Doctor Who!

22 – Fairy Lights

By pau101

Game Versions: 1.12, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

One of my favorite mods, Fairy Lights adds customizable hanging lights! They can be adjusted looser or tighter, depending on preference, and come with various light shapes you can combine in one strand. You also can place the lights separately to use for light sources and decoration!

23 – Modern Flat Colored Blocks

By anar4732

Game Version: 1.16

For servers that encourage building and creativity, this mod is perfect. Not only does it find a use for all that cobblestone, but it provides custom colored blocks! Each color comes in either solid, transparent, or glowing forms and can be used along with Chisel & Bits!

24 – Mo’ Features

By beigieyt

Game Version: 1.16

The name says it all! Mo’ Features adds a miscellaneous bag of new blocks, items, and mobs to Minecraft. Most notable are the fruit cows with matching leather armor sets! It also adds in colored planks, Pillager Brutes, honey bears, stripped fences, steel ore, and so much more!

25 – Sweet Concrete

CurseForge

By rahalbytes

Game Versions: 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

Sweet Concrete adds much needed block variations to Minecraft’s concrete blocks. It includes stairs, walls, slabs, fences, ladders, and so many more variations to make all builders happy!

26 – Lotta Terracotta

CurseForge

By rahalbytes

Game Versions: 1.14, 1.15, 1.16

Much like its sister mod above, Lotta Terracotta adds many new block variations to the base game’s terracotta blocks. It includes vertical slabs, pressure plates, signs, glaze terracotta tiles, and many more!

27 – Adorn

By Juicebus

Game Version: 1.16

This delightful mod adds in various furniture and decoration blocks like chairs, sofas, drawers, and even kitchen counters! It’s also compatible with biome mods and includes their block variants.

28 – Block Diversity

CurseForge

By imawinddow2003

Game Versions: 1.15, 1.16

This is another fantastic building blocks mod for Minecraft servers or singleplayer worlds. It adds 16 new colors to go with a handful of new block types. Some examples are plates, quarter slabs, pillars, carpeted stairs, and switches!

29 – Buddycards

CurseForge

By wildcard_gamer

Game Version: 1.16

Buddycards is such a unique mod, it’s perfect for large servers with a connected community. This mod adds collectible sets of cards which can be stored in a binder and traded between players. There’s over 300 cards to collect, and compatible mods add special card sets as well!

30 – Craftable Horse Armour & Saddle

By EwyBoy

Game Versions: 1.14, 1.15, 1.16, 1.17

Saddles and horse armor are often overlooked items in vanilla Minecraft. While neither are craftable in the base game, this mod makes it possible! You can now craft saddles and all types of Minecraft horse armor.
