If you're done with your PlayStation Network account and are ready to move on, you can close your account in a few simple steps.

It's important to note that once you close your account, the only way you can reactivate your account is by speaking to an account specialist with PlayStation.

So, if the process of calling a conglomerate like Sony doesn't appeal to you, make sure you're absolutely certain closing your account is something you want to do before proceeding.

What happens when you close your PSN account

When you close your PSN account, your console can no longer access online features. This includes PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home, Trophies, and Friend Lists.

You'll also lose access to any subscriptions you have, such as PlayStation Plus, as well as access to your PSN wallet. Unfortunately, there is no simple way to transfer money out of your PSN wallet, and any money left in your wallet is nonrefundable.

Any purchased content downloaded to your console, including games, DLC, and avatars, will still be accessible to you while gaming.

Let's get started. Here's how to close your PSN account.

PSN chat support

Put simply, you have to contact Sony with your email address and online ID on hand to request an account closure.

Finding out who to contact is a little tricky (they wouldn't want closing your account to be easy, right?), and it includes a touch too many steps.

Here's the shortcut link to the PlayStation Chat Support, otherwise, here's the step-by-step breakdown for how to find this info on the Sony PlayStation website. Please note that the chat support is only available from 8:00am–8:00pm PT. Visiting the chat during its off time will result in you see the cute picture attached to this step.

How to reach the "contact us" page on the PlayStation website

  1. Visit Sony PlayStation and click on the Support dropdown menu at the top of the screen.
  2. Click on Support.
  3. In the search bar, type in "close my PSN account" and hit Enter.
  4. Click on How to close your account for PlayStation™ Network (it should be the first option).
  5. Click on the blue, underlined contact us option.
  6. Finally, click on Account & Security on the left-hand side, followed by Change online ID & other account questions. This will take you to the Live chat option at the bottom of the screen, where they can help you close your account.

Pretty tedious, right? Plenty of PS gamers seeking to close their accounts have been deterred by the lengthy process. Instead, many seek to edit their account information, which I'll show you how to do in the next step.

PlayStation Network login
  1. On your phone or computer, visit the Sony PlayStation homepage and click Sign In at the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
  2. Sign In using your login information.
  3. Click on your character icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and open your Account Settings.
  4. On the left-hand side of your screen, you'll see all of the different ways you can customize your account, from changing (or removing) your credit card to family management and more.

Closing your PSN account might not be the most straightforward thing in the world, but changing your account information is.

Happy gaming (or non-gaming), friends!
