When you update the firmware of any piece of hardware like the AirPods Pro, you're essentially making sure that your hardware has protection from any bugs that might have arisen. But you're also ensuring that hardware like your AirPods Pro has the latest features and quality of life improvements.

H1 Chip

Apple specifically designed its H1 chip for headphones, so that they could update and improve the AirPods Pro over time—making the investment in them continue to improve. The H1 chip has now been adopted by the Beats line of headphones, as well.

What's the latest firmware?

As of the writing of this guide (Dec. 2020), the latest firmware is 3A283, which includes updates intended to improve the sound quality of the AirPods Pro, as well as introduce Apple's version of surround sound—"Spatial Audio."

Update Firmware AirPods Pro

There's really only one way to update the firmware of the Apple AirPods Pro. And best of all, it doesn't require much more than simply connecting/syncing your AirPods Pro to your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

  • Place your AirPods Pro earbuds into their case.
  • Wait 30 seconds.
  • Open your AirPods Pro case.
  • Make sure that your AirPods Pro are recognized by your device.

The update will happen automatically when Apple schedules the release for the AirPods Pro.

Make sure your AirPods Pro case is open and the earbuds are inside.

  • Open your Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Select General.
  • Select About.
  • Scroll down and select AirPods Pro.
  • Check for the latest firmware version.
