A Potion of the Turtle Master is a consumable item in Minecraft that reduces incoming damage but slows down a player. It is the only Minecraft potion with mixed effects: Slowness as a negative effect and Resistance as a positive effect. Like its name, it makes you slow like a turtle with the Slowness status effect. At the same time, it makes you resistant to damage with the Resistance status effect.

Both Resistance and Slowness have levels. Incoming damage is reduced by 20% multiplied by the level of Resistance. Meanwhile, movement is decreased by 15% multiplied by the level of Slowness. A regular Potion of Turtle Master gives Slowness IV and Resistance III, while an enhanced version gives Slowness VI and Resistance IV. The higher the resistance, the slower you get.

Due to this and the difficulty of getting its base ingredient, players are likely to turn to other alternatives. We generally do not recommend making this potion for beginners, especially when dealing with long-range attacks. There are better alternatives to reduce incoming damage such as wearing armor. However, advanced players may find this useful in close-range combat where they don’t need to move around too much.

Another reason why you may want to use a Potion of the Turtle Master is that there are only 3 ways to get the Resistance effect in Minecraft: using a Beacon, eating a Golden Apple, or drinking a Potion of the Turtle Master. Depending on your resources, brewing a Turtle of the Potion Master may be preferable to you since the Beacon is both expensive and time-consuming to make.

How to Brew a Regular Potion of the Turtle Master in Minecraft?

To brew a regular Potion of the Turtle Master, gather the required ingredients and follow the recipe below:

Ingredients required:

1 Water Bottle

1 Nether Wart

1 Turtle Shell

Tools required for the brewing process:

Brewing Stand

Blaze Powder

1 – Make a Water Bottle

To start, get a Glass Bottle by putting 3 Glass Blocks in a Crafting Table. With the Glass Bottle equipped, interact with a water source to create a Water Bottle. This recipe uses only 1 Water Bottle but you can put up to 3 Water Bottles in the Brewing Stand if you want to make more potions in one go.

2 – Obtain a Turtle Shell

The base ingredient for a Potion of the Turtle Master is a Turtle Shell which is made by putting 5 Scutes in a Crafting Table.

Scutes are dropped by baby turtles when they grow into adult turtles. Unfortunately, acquiring Scutes this way can be time-consuming as you need to wait for either the turtle eggs to hatch or the baby turtles to grow up. You can feed baby turtles Seagrass to speed up their growth. If there are no baby turtles, you need to wait 4 to 5 days in-game for the eggs to hatch. If there are no eggs, you must breed the adult turtles by feeding them Seagrass. You won’t have to wait that long if you’re lucky, but be warned that this process usually takes some time.

Alternatively, you can buy Scutes from Cleric Villagers at the Expert level.

3 – Gather Nether Wart and Blaze Rods

Nether Wart and Blaze Rods can both be found in Nether Fortresses. Nether Warts grow on Soul Sand so keep that in mind. Meanwhile, Blazes drop Blaze Rods when killed.

You need the Blaze Rods to craft Blaze Powder which will serve as your fuel for the Brewing Stand.

4 – Brew an Awkward Potion

After getting everything, prepare your Brewing Stand by putting Blaze Powder in the fuel slot. Next, put the Nether Wart in the base ingredient slot and the Water Bottle in any of the potion slots. The brewing will then commence.

Once it’s done, you will get an Awkard Potion.

5 – Brew a Potion of the Turtle Master

With the Awkward Potion in the potion slot, put the Turtle Shell in the base ingredient slot. When the brewing finishes this time, you will get a regular Potion of the Turtle Master!

The Potion of the Turtle Master (00:20) grants Slowness IV and Resistance III for 20 seconds to anyone who drinks it.

How to Use the Potion of the Turtle Master?

Like all regular potions, you use a Potion of the Turtle Master by drinking it.

For the Java and Education Editions, the command for drinking is pressing right-click and holding it until the drinking action is done.

Bedrock Edition uses the following controls:

  • Keyboard & Mouse: Right-click and hold.
  • Controller: Press the LT, L2, or ZL button and hold.
  • Mobile: Tap the screen and hold.

An empty Glass Bottle will be left behind once you’re finished drinking. Particle effects will appear to indicate that the Slowness and Resistance status effects are active. You can check the duration of each effect by opening the inventory menu.

How to Extend the Duration of a Potion of the Turtle Master?

To extend the duration of a Potion of the Turtle Master, add Redstone Dust to a regular Potion of the Turtle Master (00:20). This will give you a Potion of the Turtle Master that lasts for 40 seconds.

Result: Potion of the Turtle Master + (00:40) with Slowness IV and Resistance III

How to Make a Potion of the Turtle Master II?

To make a Potion of the Turtle Master II or a variant with enhanced status effects, add Glowstone Dust to a regular Potion of the Turtle Master (00:20). This will give you a Potion of the Turtle Master with Slowness VI and Resistance IV.

Result: Potion of the Turtle Master II (00:20) with Slowness VI and Resistance IV

How to Make Other Variants of the Potion of the Turtle Master?

The Potion of the Turtle Master has Splash and Lingering variants made by using Gunpowder and Dragon’s Breath respectively. To find out how to make each one, follow the recipes below:

How to Make a Splash Potion of the Turtle Master

Splash Potion of the Turtle Master (00:20)

To extend the duration of the Splash Potion variant, you can do two methods:

  • Add Redstone Dust to a Splash Potion of the Turtle Master (00:20).

Both methods will give you a Splash Potion of the Turtle Master + (00:40) that lasts for 40 seconds.

Splash Potion of the Turtle Master II (00:20)

To get a Splash Potion variant with enhanced effects, add Glowstone Dust to a Splash Potion of the Turtle Master (00:20). This will result in a Splash Potion that grants Slowness VI and Resistance IV for 20 seconds.

How to Make a Lingering Potion of the Turtle Master

Lingering Potion of the Turtle Master (00:05)

To make a Lingering Potion of the Turtle Master, add Dragon’s Breath to a Splash Potion of the Turtle Master (00:20). When the Lingering Potion variant is thrown at a block or area, any entity passing through it will be affected by Slowness IV and Resistance III for 5 seconds.

Lingering Potion of the Turtle Master + (00:10)

There are two ways to extend the duration of the Lingering Potion variant:

  • Add Redstone Dust to a Lingering Potion of the Turtle Master (00:05).
  • Add Dragon’s Breath to a Splash Potion of the Turtle Master + (00:40).

Both methods will give you a Lingering Potion of the Turtle Master + (00:10) that grants Slowness IV and Resistance III for 10 seconds.

Lingering Potion of the Turtle Master II (00:05)

To get a Lingering Potion variant with enhanced effects, add Glowstone Dust to a Lingering Potion of the Turtle Master (00:05). This gives you a Lingering Potion of the Turtle Master II (00:05) which grants Slowness VI and Resistance IV for 5 seconds.

How to Make an Arrow of the Turtle Master Using a Lingering Potion of the Turtle Master

Arrow of the Turtle Master (00:02)

To make an Arrow of the Turtle Master, put 8 Arrows and 1 Lingering Potion of the Turtle Master (00:05) in a Crafting Table. The resulting Arrows of the Turtle Master can be used to hit an entity to affect them with Slowness IV and Resistance III.

Arrow of the Turtle Master + (00:05)

To make an Arrow of the Turtle Master with an extended duration, put 8 Arrows and 1 Lingering Potion of the Turtle Master + (00:10) in a Crafting Table. This variant will last for 5 seconds.

Arrow of the Turtle Master II (00:02)

To make an Arrow of the Turtle Master with enhanced effects, put 8 Arrows and 1 Lingering Potion of the Turtle Master II (00:05) in a Crafting Table. This gives you 8 Arrows of the Turtle Master II (00:02) that gives Slowness VI and Resistance IV for 2 seconds.

How to Remove the Effects of a Potion of the Turtle Master?

Like all status effects, you can remove the effects from a Potion of the Turtle Master by drinking Milk. Since Slowness is a negative effect, you may consider using a Milk Bucket to remove it. However, this also removes the Resistance effect which may be beneficial to you.

To get a Milk Bucket, use a Bucket on a cow, goat, or mooshroom.

Where to Find a Potion of the Turtle Master in Creative Mode?

In Creative Mode, you can find a Potion of the Turtle Master and its variants in the Creative Inventory Menu. Here, you can also search for its name.

If you have cheats enabled, you can also use console commands. In the Java Edition, you can enter the following command in the chat window to get a Potion of the Turtle Master:

/give @p potion{Potion:"minecraft:turtle_master"} 1
  • give: This is the main command.
  • @p: This refers to the nearest player or you. It can be replaced by your username.
  • potion{Potion:”minecraft:turtle_master”}: This indicates that you want to give the entity above a Potion of the Turtle Master.
  • 1: This is the amount of the above item that you want to have.

In the Bedrock Edition, the following command is used:

/give @p potion 1 37

The Minecraft Wiki discusses the /give command and its syntaxes in further detail, so check it out if you want to learn more!

What Are Alternatives to Using a Potion of the Turtle Master?

Alternatives to using a Potion of the Turtle Master are wearing armor, stocking up on food, eating a Golden Apple, or using other potions. Due to the potion’s mixed effects and how difficult it is to get Scutes, players are likely to choose these other methods to reduce incoming damage.

  • Wear armor. All types of armor reduce damage depending on the materials used. You can either make them or find them by looting chests. Armor can also be enchanted to give you more positive status effects, so players tend to go for this option instead.
  • Eat food. If you don’t have the resources to make armor or potions yet, bringing food is a great option to keep your health up in dangerous situations. A Golden Apple in particular restores hunger and health while also giving you Regeneration II and Absorption I.
  • Use other potions. If you want to evade incoming attacks faster, you can use a Potion of Swiftness. If you want to prevent fall damage, the Potion of Slow Falling is another viable option. For potions that restore your health, you can use a Potion of Healing or a Potion of Regeneration.
