A Potion of Healing in Minecraft is a consumable item which grants Instant Health. Instant Health is a status effect that immediately restores health. This is one of the effects like Instant Damage that does not have a duration. However, its potency can be increased.

Potions of Healing have the following potency levels: Instant Health I and Instant Health II. Instant Health I heals 4 points (×2) of health, while Instant Health II heals 8 points (×4). This potion heals only living mobs, but if its Splash or Lingering variants are used on undead mobs, it will harm them instead.

The Potion of Healing is useful if you’re in a pinch and need to immediately restore your health by a significant amount. Most players opt to use food to save up on resources. However, eating food refills your hunger bar first and it may take a while for health points to be applied. Thus, drinking a Potion of Healing may be more beneficial to you especially if you don’t have time to wait for your health to be restored.

This potion can also be used against undead mobs such as Zombies, Skeletons, and Phantoms to deplete their health. Before you can do this, you must learn how to make a regular Potion of Healing.

How to Brew a Regular Potion of Healing in Minecraft?

To brew a regular Potion of Healing in Minecraft, gather the required tools and ingredients, then follow the recipe below:

Ingredients required:

1 Water Bottle

1 Nether Wart

1 Glistening Melon Slice

Tools required for the brewing process:

Brewing Stand

Blaze Powder

1 – Make a Water Bottle

Before you can make the potion, you need a Water Bottle. You can make up to 3 Water Bottles to put in a Brewing Stand. However, this recipe uses only 1.

Make a Water Bottle by using a Glass Bottle on a water source. Glass Bottles can be obtained by putting 3 Glass Blocks in a Crafting Table. If you don’t have any Glass Blocks on hand, simply smelt Sand using a Furnace to get some.

2 – Obtain a Glistening Melon Slice

Glistening Melon Slices can be found as chest loot near ruined portals. Since this method requires luck, you can craft them instead using 8 Gold Nuggets and 1 Melon Slice.

Gold Nuggets can usually be found as chest loot or farmed from Zombified Piglins. These can also be obtained by putting Gold Ingots in a Crafting Table or smelting golden tools and armor. If you can access the Nether, you may also find Nether Gold Ores which can be mined to get Gold Nuggets.

Melon Slices can be obtained from breaking Melon blocks. Finding Melons also requires some luck as they generate randomly in jungle biomes, savanna village farms, and woodland mansions.

3 – Gather Nether Wart and Blaze Rods

If you happen to get Gold Nuggets in the Nether, make sure to look for Nether Wart and Blazes on the way. Both can typically be found in Nether Fortresses, with the Nether Wart growing on Soul Sand and Blazes roaming nearby.

Defeat some Blazes to get Blaze Rods. Put the Blaze Rods in a Crafting Table to get Blaze Powder, which will act as your fuel for the Brewing Stand.

4 – Brew an Awkward Potion

Next, prepare your Brewing Stand by putting Blaze Powder in the fuel slot. Then, put the Nether Wart in the base ingredient slot and the Water Bottle in any of the potion slots.

Wait for the brewing to finish to get an Awkward Potion.

5 – Brew a Potion of Healing

With the Awkward Potion still in the potion slot, place the Glistening Melon Slice in the base ingredient slot. Once the brewing finishes, you’ll get a Potion of Healing!

This recipe produces a regular Potion of Healing that grants Instant Health I when consumed.

Result: Potion of Healing

How to Use the Potion of Healing in Minecraft?

Similar to all regular potions, the only way to use a Potion of Healing is to drink it.

To do this in the Java and Education Editions, press right-click and hold until the drinking action is done.

The Bedrock Edition uses the following controls:

  • Keyboard & Mouse: Right-click and hold.
  • Controller: Press the LT, L2, or ZL button and hold.
  • Mobile: Tap the screen and hold.

After drinking the potion, you will be left with an empty Glass Bottle. Your health will be restored instantly, which you can check on your health bar.

How to Make a Potion of Healing II?

In a Brewing Stand, add Glowstone Dust to a regular Potion of Healing. This returns a Potion of Healing with enhanced potency, granting Instant Health II when consumed.

Result: Potion of Healing II with Instant Health II

How to Make Other Variants of the Potion of Healing?

The Potion of Healing has Splash and Lingering variants that can be brewed by using Gunpowder and Dragon’s Breath respectively. Find out how to make each one by following the recipes below:

How to Make a Splash Potion of Healing

Splash Potion of Healing

In a Brewing Stand, add Gunpowder to a Potion of Healing. This returns a regular Splash Potion of Healing.

When the Splash variant is thrown at an entity, it heals them for 4 points of health (×2). When it hits an undead mob, it depletes 6 points of health (×3) instead.

Splash Potion of Healing II

There are two ways to enhance the potency level of a Splash Potion of Strength:

  • Add Glowstone Dust to a Splash Potion of Healing.
  • Add Gunpowder to a Potion of Healing II.

Both methods return a Splash Potion of Healing II.

When the enhanced Splash variant is thrown at an entity, it heals them for 8 points of health (×4). However, if it hits an undead mob, it decreases their health by 12 points (×6).

How to Make a Lingering Potion of Healing

Lingering Potion of Healing

In a Brewing Stand, add Dragon’s Breath to a Splash Potion of Healing. This returns a regular Lingering Potion of Healing that leaves behind a cloud of Instant Health for 5 seconds.

When the Lingering variant is thrown at a block, the cloud heals passing entities with 2 points of health (×1) per second, totaling up to 10 points (×5).

If an undead mob passes through the cloud, they lose 3 points of health (×1.5) per second, totaling up to 15 points (×7.5).

Lingering Potion of Healing II

There are two ways to enhance the potency level of a Lingering Potion of Healing:

  • Add Glowstone Dust to a Lingering Potion of Healing.
  • Add Dragon’s Breath to a Splash Potion of Healing II.

Both methods return a Lingering Potion of Healing II.

The cloud of Instant Health now heals 4 points of health per second (×2), totaling up to 20 points (×10). It will damage undead mobs by 6 points (×3) per second, totaling up to 30 points (×15).

How to Make an Arrow of Healing Using a Lingering Potion of Healing

Arrow of Healing

Put 8 Arrows and 1 Lingering Potion of Healing in a Crafting Table. When an entity is hit by this arrow, they will instantly receive 4 points of health (×2).

If the target is an undead mob, they will receive 6 points (×3) of damage.

Arrow of Healing II

Put 8 Arrows and 1 Lingering Potion of Healing II in a Crafting Table. When an entity is hit by this enhanced variant, they will receive 8 points of health (×4).

However, if the target is an undead mob, they will receive 12 points (×6) of damage.

Where to Find a Potion of Healing in Creative Mode?

In Creative Mode, you can find the Potion of Healing and its variants in the Creative Inventory Menu by simply looking for them or searching their names.

You can also use console commands if your cheats are enabled.

If you have the Java Edition, enter the following command in the chat window to get a Potion of Healing:

/give @p potion{Potion:"minecraft:healing"} 1
  • give: This is the main command.
  • @p: This refers to the nearest player or you. This can also be replaced by your username.
  • potion{Potion:”minecraft:healing”}: This indicates that you want to give the entity above a Potion of Healing.
  • 1: This is the amount of the above item that you want to have.

If you have the Bedrock Edition, use the following command instead:

/give @p potion 1 21
