A Potion of Regeneration in Minecraft is a consumable item that can restore health over time. It gives the Regeneration status effect which restores 1 point ( ½ heart) every second for as long as the effect is active.

Like all status effects, Regeneration has potency levels. Potions of Regeneration only apply the following levels: Regeneration I and Regeneration II. Regeneration I heals 1 point () every 2.5 seconds, while Regeneration II 1 point () every 1.2 seconds.

This potion can save your life when you’re facing dangerous mobs or taking continuous damage either from enemies or harmful blocks. Food is an easy alternative, but the Potion of Regeneration heals faster. Eating food also takes more time as you need to wait for the eating action to finish before healing can take effect. For the Potion of Regeneration, you only need to drink it once, so you can focus on fighting or exploring as long as the Regeneration effect is active without having to eat food multiple times in a row.

The only downside is that making this potion is more expensive than finding or making most food items. With all these in mind, players may still prefer to use a Potion of Regeneration especially when they cannot stop to eat while fighting dangerous entities or boss mobs like the Ender Dragon and the Wither.

How to Brew a Regular Potion of Regeneration in Minecraft?

To brew a regular Potion of Regeneration, gather the required ingredients and follow the recipe below:

Ingredients required:

1 Water Bottle

1 Nether Wart

1 Ghast Tear

Tools required for the brewing process:

Brewing Stand

Blaze Powder

1 – Make a Water Bottle

Before brewing, make a Glass Bottle by putting 3 Glass Blocks in a Crafting Table. Then, use the Glass Bottle on a water source to get a Water Bottle.

This recipe uses only 1 Water Bottle but you can put up to 3 Water Bottles in the Brewing Stand. You can do this if you want to make more potions in one go.

2 – Obtain a Ghast Tear

The base ingredient for a Potion of Regeneration is a Ghast Tear which is dropped by Ghasts when they die. Ghasts are found roaming the Nether. Fortunately, you can also find most ingredients for this potion in the Nether, so make sure to get everything you need before leaving!

3 – Gather Nether Wart and Blaze Rods

While you’re in the Nether, gather some Nether Wart and Blaze Rods on the way. Both can be found in Nether Fortresses. Nether Warts grow on Soul Sand while Blaze Rods are dropped by Blazes when they die.

Once you have Blaze Rods, you can put them in a Crafting Table to make Blaze Powder which will act as the fuel for the Brewing Stand.

4 – Brew an Awkward Potion

Next, prepare your Brewing Stand by putting Blaze Powder in the fuel slot. Then, put the Nether Wart in the base ingredient slot and the Water Bottle in any of the potion slots.

Once the brewing process is done, you will get an Awkard Potion.

5 – Brew a Potion of Regeneration

Keep the Awkward Potion in the potion slot and place the Ghast Tear in the base ingredient slot. Wait for the brewing to finish to get a regular Potion of Regeneration!

The Potion of Regeneration (00:45) lasts for 45 seconds, healing 0.2 heart per second.

How to Use the Potion of Regeneration in Minecraft?

Similar to all regular potions, the only way to use a Potion of Regeneration is to drink it.

To execute this in the Java and Education Editions, press right-click and hold until the drinking action is finished.

Meanwhile, the Bedrock Edition uses the following controls:

  • Keyboard & Mouse: Right-click and hold.
  • Controller: Press the LT, L2, or ZL button and hold.
  • Mobile: Tap the screen and hold.

After drinking the potion, you will be left with an empty Glass Bottle. Particle effects will appear on the screen to indicate that the Regeneration status effect is present. You can check more details on the status effect such as its duration by opening the inventory menu.

How to Extend the Duration of a Potion of Regeneration?

To extend the duration of a Potion of Regeneration, add Redstone Dust to a regular Potion of the Regeneration (00:45). This returns a potion that grants Regeneration for 1 minute and 30 seconds in the Java Edition or 2 minutes in the Bedrock Edition.

Result: Potion of Regeneration + (01:30/02:00)

How to Make a Potion of Regeneration II?

To make a Potion of Regeneration II or a variant with enhanced Regeneration, add Glowstone Dust to a regular Potion of Regeneration (00:45). This returns a variant with Regeneration II that lasts for 22 seconds.

Result: Potion of Regeneration II (00:22) with Regeneration II

How to Make Other Variants of the Potion of Regeneration?

The Potion of Regeneration has Splash and Lingering variants that can be brewed by using Gunpowder and Dragon’s Breath respectively. Find out how to make each one by following the recipes below:

How to Make a Splash Potion of Regeneration

Splash Potion of Regeneration (00:45/00:33)

To make a Splash Potion of Regeneration, add Gunpowder to a Potion of Regeneration (00:45). When thrown at another entity, this Splash potion grants Regeneration for 45 seconds in the Java Edition or 33 seconds in the Bedrock Edition.

Splash Potion of Regeneration + (01:30)

There are two ways to extend the duration of the Splash Potion variant:

  • Add Redstone Dust to a Splash Potion of Regeneration (00:45/00:33) in a Brewing Stand.
  • Add Gunpowder to a Potion of Regeneration + (01:30/02:00) in a Brewing Stand.

Both methods return a Splash Potion of Regeneration + (01:30) that lasts for 1 minute and 30 seconds.

Splash Potion of Regeneration II (00:22/00:16)

To get a Splash Potion variant with enhanced Regeneration, add Glowstone Dust to a Splash Potion of Regeneration (00:45/00:33). This returns a Splash Potion that grants Regeneration II for 22 seconds in the Java Edition or 16 seconds in the Bedrock Edition.

How to Make a Lingering Potion of Regeneration

Lingering Potion of Regeneration (00:11)

To make a Lingering Potion of Regeneration, add Dragon’s Breath to a Splash Potion of Regeneration (00:45/00:33). When this variant is thrown at a block or area, entities passing through it will be affected by Regeneration II for 11 seconds.

Lingering Potion of Regeneration + (00:22/00:30)

If you want to extend the duration of the Lingering Potion variant, you have two methods to pick from:

  • Add Redstone Dust to a Lingering Potion of Regeneration (00:11) in a Brewing Stand.
  • Add Dragon’s Breath to a Splash Potion of Regeneration + (01:30) in a Brewing Stand.

Both methods return a Lingering Potion of Regeneration + (00:22/00:30) that grants Regeneration II for 22 seconds in the Java Edition or 30 seconds in the Bedrock Edition.

Lingering Potion of Regeneration II (00:05)

To get a Lingering Potion variant with enhanced Regeneration, add Glowstone Dust to a Lingering Potion of Regeneration (00:11). This returns a Lingering Potion of Regeneration II (00:05) which grants Regeneration II for 5 seconds.

How to Make an Arrow of Regeneration Using a Lingering Potion of Regeneration

Arrow of Regeneration (00:05)

To make an Arrow of Regeneration, put 8 Arrows and 1 Lingering Potion of Regeneration (00:11) in a Crafting Table. When an entity is hit by an Arrow of Regeneration, it will give them the Regeneration status effect for 5 seconds.

Arrow of the Regeneration + (00:11/00:15)

To get an Arrow of Regeneration with an extended duration, put 8 Arrows and 1 Lingering Potion of Regeneration + (00:22/00:30) in a Crafting Table. The resulting arrows will give affected entities Regeneration for 11 seconds in the Java Edition or 15 seconds in the Bedrock Edition.

Arrow of Regeneration II (00:02)

To make an Arrow of Regeneration with enhanced Regeneration, put 8 Arrows and 1 Lingering Potion of Regeneration II (00:05) in a Crafting Table. This will give you 8 Arrows of Regeneration (00:02) with effects that last for 2 seconds.

Where to Find a Potion of Regeneration in Creative Mode?

In Creative Mode, you can find the Potion of Regeneration and its variants in the Creative Inventory Menu by simply looking for them or searching their names.

You can also use console commands if you have cheats enabled. If you’re using the Java Edition, enter the following command in the chat window to get a Potion of Regeneration:

/give @p potion{Potion:"minecraft:regeneration"} 1
  • give: This is the main command.
  • @p: This refers to the nearest player or you. This can also be replaced by your username.
  • potion{Potion:”minecraft:regeneration”}: This indicates that you want to give the entity above a Potion of Regeneration.
  • 1: This is the amount of the above item that you want to have.

If you’re using the Bedrock Edition, enter the following command instead:

/give @p potion 1 28

Check out the Minecraft Wiki to learn more about the /give command and other syntaxes you can use!

What Are Alternatives to Using a Potion of Regeneration?

Since a Potion of Regeneration may be expensive to brew early in the game, players choose to bring food or wear armor to protect themselves from damage. Here are some options you can use if you cannot afford a Potion of Regeneration or you want to try something else:

  • Stock up on food. Food is the most reliable resource for restoring health in Minecraft since they can easily be crafted and obtained, unlike potions. Even advanced players bring some whenever they go out to explore or fight mobs. When your hunger bar is full, your health takes from it and automatically regenerates, so it’s recommended to keep an eye on your hunger bar as it can also save your life.
  • Wear armor. Whether enchanted or not, armor reduces any damage you take from exploration and combat. While some are harder to craft than others, you can benefit from them longer than potions until they eventually break.
  • Eat a Golden Apple. Golden Apples restore a ton of health in a short amount of time. While the Potion of Regeneration lasts longer and grants more health, Golden Apples can be looted or crafted using 8 Gold Ingots and an Apple. It gives you Regeneration II for 5 seconds, healing up to 4 hearts. It also has a rarer variant called Enchanted Golden Apple which can only be looted but can heal up to 8 hearts.
  • Use a Totem of Undying. This single-use item is dropped by Evokers which appear during village raids. If you’re lucky enough to get one and survive a raid, equip this to avoid dying from fatal damage once.
