A Potion of Invisibility in Minecraft is a consumable item that turns you invisible, allowing you to go undetected by mobs. Unlike some status effects, Invisibility has only one potency level since the effect is pretty straightforward. Its Splash and Lingering variants can also be used to affect other entities with Invisibility.

The Potion of Invisibility is mainly used to avoid hostile mobs especially when roaming around at night or exploring dangerous areas like caves and underwater locations where hostile mobs are likely to spawn. However, even if you’re invisible, mobs will start to notice you if you get too close to them. To be precise, Invisibility only decreases the mob detection range by 7%, but while it’s not a 0, it’s still extremely useful for sneaking around as long as you mind your distance.

Be warned that each piece of armor you wear increases the mob detection range by 17.5%, totaling up to 70% when you wear full armor. If you’re careful, you can make the most out of the Invisibility effect even with a few pieces of armor on. Notice too how you can still see the armor you’re wearing even when the Invisibility effect is active, so it makes sense that you’d get detected more easily this way.

Features that are not affected by Invisibility other than armor pieces are held items, particle effects, fire, and stuck arrows. You may also notice Wandering Traders drinking Potions of Invisibility at dusk to avoid hostile mobs when traveling at night.

How to Brew a Regular Potion of Invisibility in Minecraft?

To brew a regular Potion of Invisibility, gather the required tools and ingredients and follow the recipe below:

Ingredients required:

1 Fermented Spider Eye

1 Potion of Night Vision

🛈 Note: This article briefly goes over how to make a Potion of Night Vision. Follow this guide for more details how to make one including its variants.

Tools required for the brewing process:

Brewing Stand

Blaze Powder

1 – Make a Fermented Spider Eye

The Fermented Spider Eye will serve as the base ingredient for the Potion of Invisibility. To craft one, put 1 Spider Eye, 1 Brown Mushroom, and 1 Sugar in a Crafting Table.

Spider Eyes are dropped by Spiders when they are killed. You can easily find some roaming around at night. Brown Mushrooms can be found under trees or in shaded areas like in swamps, mushroom fields, and the Nether. Finally, Sugar can be obtained by crafting it from Sugar Canes and Honey Bottles or defeating Witches.

2 – Make Blaze Powder

Blaze Powder is used as a fuel for the Brewing Stand. To get some, you need Blaze Rods which can be obtained by defeating Blazes found in Nether Fortresses.

Put a Blaze Rod in a Crafting Table and it will return 2 units of Blaze Powder.

3 – Brew a Potion of Night Vision

Make a Potion of Night Vision by adding a Golden Carrot to an Awkward Potion in a Brewing Stand. You can make up to 3 potions in the Brewing Stand, but for this recipe, we will use only one.

To find out more about the Potion of Night Vision, its ingredients, and its variants, you can visit this article:

Once the brewing is finished, you will get a regular Potion of Night Vision (03:00).

4 – Brew a Potion of Invisibility

Keep the Potion of Night Vision in the Brewing Stand. Then, put the Fermented Spider Eye in the base ingredient slot. Wait for the brewing process to finish, and you’ll have a Potion of Invisibility!

This recipe produces a regular Potion of Invisibility (03:00) that applies Invisibility for 3 minutes when consumed.

Result: Potion of Invisibility (03:00)

How to Use the Potion of Invisibility in Minecraft?

Like all regular potions, you use a Potion of Invisibility by drinking it.

In the Java and Education Editions, you can perform this action by pressing right-click and holding until your avatar finishes drinking.

The Bedrock Edition uses the following controls:

  • Keyboard & Mouse: Right-click and hold.
  • Controller: Press the LT, L2, or ZL button and hold.
  • Mobile: Tap the screen and hold.

After drinking, an empty Glass Bottle will be left behind. Your avatar will disappear and particle effects will show to indicate that the Invisibility status effect is active. You can check its duration by opening the inventory menu.

How to Extend the Duration of a Potion of Invisibility?

To extend the duration of a Potion of Invisibility, add Redstone Dust to a regular Potion of Invisibility (03:00) in a Brewing Stand. This will extend the potion’s Invisibility effect to 8 minutes.

Result: Potion of Invisibility + (08:00)

How to Make Other Variants of the Potion of Invisibility?

The Potion of Invisibility has Splash and Lingering variants that can be brewed by using Gunpowder and Dragon’s Breath respectively. Find out how to make each one by following the recipes below:

How to Make a Splash Potion of Invisibility

Splash Potion of Invisibility (03:00/02:15)

To brew a Splash Potion of Invisibility, add Gunpowder to a regular Potion of Invisibility (03:00). When thrown at another entity, the regular Splash Potion variant will grant Invisibility for 3 minutes in the Java Edition or 2 minutes and 15 seconds in the Bedrock Edition.

Splash Potion of Invisibility + (08:00/06:00)

To extend the duration of the Splash Potion variant, use any of the following methods:

  • Add Redstone Dust to a Splash Potion of Invisibility (03:00/02:15) in a Brewing Stand.
  • Add Gunpowder to a Potion of Invisibility + (08:00) in a Brewing Stand.

Both methods result in a Splash Potion of Invisibility that grants Invisibility for 8 minutes in the Java Edition or 6 minutes in the Bedrock Edition.

How to Make a Lingering Potion of Invisibility

Lingering Potion of Invisibility (00:45)

To brew a Lingering Potion of Invisibility, add Dragon’s Breath to a Splash Potion of Invisibility (03:00/02:15). When thrown at a block or area, the cloud left behind will affect entities passing through it with Invisibility for 45 seconds.

Lingering Potion of Invisibility + (02:00)

To extend the duration of the Lingering Potion variant, use any of the following methods:

  • Add Redstone Dust to a Lingering Potion of Invisibility (00:45) in a Brewing Stand.
  • Add Dragon’s Breath to a Splash Potion of Invisibility + (08:00/06:00) in a Brewing Stand.

Both methods result in a Lingering Potion of Invisibility that grants invisibility for 2 minutes.

How to Make an Arrow of Invisibility Using a Lingering Potion of Invisibility

Arrow of Invisibility (00:22)

To craft an Arrow of Invisibility, put 8 Arrows and 1 Lingering Potion of Invisibility (00:45) in a Crafting Table. When an entity is hit by this arrow, they will get Invisibility for 22 seconds.

Arrow of the Invisibility + (01:00)

To craft an Arrow of Invisibility with a longer duration, put 8 Arrows and 1 Lingering Potion of Invisibility + (02:00) in a Crafting Table. The Arrows of Invisibility will now last for 1 minute.

How to Remove the Effects of a Potion of Invisibility?

To remove the Invisibility effect, simply drink milk using a Milk Bucket. To get one, first craft a Bucket by putting 3 Iron Ingots in a Crafting Table. Then, use the Bucket on a cow, mooshroom, or goat to get a Milk Bucket.

Wandering Traders use Milk Buckets when the sun is up to dispel the effect of drinking a Potion of Invisibility the night before. You’re likely to see a Traveling Merchant carrying one during sunrise.

Where to Find a Potion of Invisibility in Creative Mode?

In Creative Mode, you can find the Potion of Invisibility and its variants in the Creative Inventory Menu by simply looking for them or searching their names.

You can also use console commands if you have cheats enabled. If you’re using the Java Edition, enter the following command in the chat window to get a Potion of Invisibility:

/give @p potion{Potion:"minecraft:invisibility"} 1
  • give: This is the main command.
  • @p: This refers to the nearest player or you. This can also be replaced by your username.
  • potion{Potion:”minecraft:invisibility”}: This indicates that you want to give the entity above a Potion of Invisibility.
  • 1: This is the amount of the above item that you want to have.

If you’re using the Bedrock Edition, enter the following command:

/give @p potion 1 7
