A Potion of Water Breathing in Minecraft is a consumable item that grants the ability to breathe underwater. It gives the Water Breathing effect. Water Breathing does not have potency levels, but its duration can be extended.

Reasons why you may want the Water Breathing effect is when you’re catching fish, gathering resources like Corals and chest loot from shipwrecks, fighting mobs like the Drowned and Elder Guardians, exploring structures like ocean monuments and underwater ruins, and building your own structures underwater. In short, the Potion of Water Breathing is something you’ll find useful if you plan to spend a long stretches of time underwater.

A possible downside to using this potion is that its resources can be difficult to acquire, especially if you plan to do this in the early-game. It requires ingredients from the Nether and underwater. The duration of the status effect is also limited, ranging from 3-8 minutes. If you use the Splash, Lingering, and Arrow variants, the duration becomes shorter. However, once you get used to it, you’ll learn to maximize your time underwater.

Aside from a Turtle Shell, the Potion of Water Breathing and its variants are the only ways to get the Water Breathing effect in Minecraft. Turtle Shell is a type of armor or helmet that gives the user Water Breathing for only 10 seconds. This helmet can be more difficult to make than the potion since it requires Scute which you only get from baby turtles. You may want to consider this if you want to get the Water Breathing effect using other ways.

We recommend using a Potion of Water Breathing alongside the Depth Strider boot enchantment to increase your underwater movement speed. To get Depth Strider, you either need to enchant a pair of boots at an Enchanting Table or use an Enchanted Book and an Anvil. Another way to increase your speed underwater is by swimming with Dolphins, which grants you with the Dolphin’s Grace status effect.

How to Brew a Regular Potion of Water Breathing in Minecraft?

To brew a regular Potion of Water Breathing in Minecraft, gather the required tools and ingredients, then follow the recipe below:

Ingredients required:

1 Water Bottle

1 Nether Wart

1 Pufferfish

Tools required for the brewing process:

Brewing Stand

Blaze Powder

How to Brew a Regular Potion of Water Breathing in Minecraft?

To brew a regular Potion of Water Breathing in Minecraft, gather the required tools and ingredients, then follow the recipe below:

1 – Make a Water Bottle

Before you can make the potion, you need a Water Bottle. You can make up to 3 Water Bottles to put in a Brewing Stand. However, this recipe uses only 1.

Make a Water Bottle by using a Glass Bottle on a water source. Glass Bottles can be obtained by putting 3 Glass Blocks in a Crafting Table. If you don’t have any Glass Blocks on hand, simply smelt Sand using a Furnace to get some.

2 – Obtain a Pufferfish

To get a Pufferfish, you need to fish one. You can fish it by either using a Fishing Rod or using a Bucket directly on a Pufferfish if you find one underwater. Alternatively, you can kill a Pufferfish underwater and it also drops 1 Pufferfish.

Guardians and Elder Guardians which can be found in ocean monuments have a chance of dropping Pufferfish, but this method is dangerous and generally not recommended unless you’re planning to loot resources in an ocean monument anyway.

3 – Gather Nether Wart and Blaze Rods

Next, go to the Nether to look for Nether Wart and Blazes. Both can usually be found in Nether Fortresses, with the Nether Wart growing on Soul Sand and Blazes floating nearby.

Defeat the Blazes to get Blaze Rods. Then, put the Blaze Rods in a Crafting Table to get Blaze Powder, which will act as your fuel for the Brewing Stand.

4 – Brew an Awkward Potion

Finally, prepare your Brewing Stand by putting Blaze Powder in the fuel slot. Place the Nether Wart in the base ingredient slot and the Water Bottle in any of the potion slots.

Wait for the brewing to finish to get an Awkward Potion.

5 – Brew a Potion of Water Breathing

With the Awkward Potion in the potion slot, put the Pufferfish in the base ingredient slot and wait. Once the brewing is done, you’ll get a Potion of Water Breathing!

This recipe produces a regular Potion of Water Breathing with an effect duration of 3 minutes.

Result: Potion of Water Breathing (03:00)
